At the end of the nineteenth century, railways were the most novel and modern form of transportation in the world. Born in Europe, following the colonial invaders, the railway gradually appeared in colonized countries as one of the symbols of capitalist power, ie carrying "mission" in both politics and economy. Railway in Vietnam is not an exception. In order to serve the purpose of military pacification and to exploit the resources and labor of Vietnam, the French colonialists established in Vietnam a network of railway transportation covering the country, from the railway lines serving federal "interests" such as the railway connecting from Tonkin to Cochinchina, from Tonkin to Yunnan (China), from Central Vietnam to Laos to local and regional railway branches.
