In Vietnam, the method of surveying community history seems to be rarely used to study migration. The dominant approach is quantitative survey, while this approach is often criticized for not providing the specific historical context of the surveyed communities. Through the case of two rural communes in Tien Giang province, the paper presents the process of applying this method to survey population dynamics of the two communities based on the instructions drawn from the theory of cultural relativity.
