 Cerium-doped Binh Thuan clay was prepared by ion exchange reaction. The water based epoxy coatings containing different concentration of clay-Ce3+ (1-7 percent) were prepared and applied on carbon steel. The obtained clay-Ce3+ was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyze. Corrosion protection properties of coatings were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, adhesion and impact resistance measurements. The results showed that the cation Ce3+ was inserted between silicate layers of clay
  d001 spacing of clay was increased from 12.6 A to 15.1 A. The presence of clay-Ce3+ improved significantly the corrosion protection of water based epoxy coatings. Among concentrations studied the concentrations of clay-Ce3+ between 3-5 percent give the best corrosion protection.
