A descriptive cross sectional study of cases of human infection with Streptococcus suis disease in human and a restrospective review of data on disease outbreaks in pigs in Hai Phong from 2010 to 2012 were conducted. The results show that: 48 cases of human infection with Streptococcus suis have been reported of which there were no fatal cases. All these cases were tested Streptococcus suis postitive and received medical care at the Viet-Tiep hospital, Hai Phong. Overall of the cases are above 30 years of age, among which the 50-59 and 40-49 groups are predominant (37,5 percent per one). There is a statistically significant difference between male and female among cases (83,3 percent versus 16,7 percent). Most of the cases were related to pig-slaughtering and/or trading (56,21 percent). The disease appeared throughout the year, h.rgher from April to October. Thirteen of fifteen districts recorded with human cases, incidence/100.000 people are higher at rural districts of Vinh Bao, Thuy Nguyen, and An Duong). Sixty-two point five percents (62,5 percent) of cases had history of consumtion of raw or not-well-prepared pig-products within 7 days prior to onset date. There an a needs to enhance surveillance of cases in both human and pigs and close collaboration with two - way communication mechanism between Department of Preventive medicine and Department of Animal health in order to control an outbreak of epidemic.
