A retrospective study was carried out to identify the epidemiological characteristics of outbreaks of the (high pathogen) porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) occurred from March 2007 to December 2012 all over the country. A total of 3,694 communes having PRRS outbreaks was reported throughout the study period. Descriptive analyses showed that the fattening pigs had the highest incidence risk (65.30 percent) and highest mortality rate (55.11 percent), followed by the piglets, sows and boars. Temporal analyses showed that following the first outbreaks reported in early March 2007, the tendency of epidemics was found annually in March to May in the northern provinces, July to September in the southern provinces. However, the average of large epidemics was re-occurred in every two years. An average with 25 communes in 100 communes yearly facing with the risk of epidemics was reported over the study period. PRRS outbreaks were occurred in northern provinces, gradually spreading all over the central and southern provinces of Viet Nam. Heavy epidemics occurred mainly focusing on the busy pig rearing areas, where high density of pig farms concentrated in the Red river delta, north-central and southern provinces of Viet Nam. Local transmission was the main epidemiological feature. Recommendation on the PRRS control measures by culling infected cases, control of transportation and predictive epidemiology analyses were mentioned.
