Based on the assumption that teaching Vietnamese language at schools will improve the communication skills of primary school students and that teaching about Vietnam must follow communication principles, this article highlights four means of developing communication skills among primary school students: 1) Improving teachers' awareness of the purpose of the communication objectives and improving their ability to create communication products/output through the process of teaching Vietnamese language, 2) Simplifying the process of identification, categorization and analysis of language units, 3) Optimizing the use of units and language components and 4) Organizing the teaching and learning of Vietnamese language through the use of communication oriented activities.
