The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the body temperatures of the seriously injured trauma patients and the serum pH, lactate and BE level upon surgery. A study was conducted on 52 seriously injured trauma patients who had to undergo operations. Esophageal temperature, arterial serum pH, lactate and BE were measured on admission. Hypothermia was considered as esophageal temperature was below 36°C. 73.1 percent patients had hypothermia
among them 13.5 percent were with moderate hypothermia. Esophageal temperature correlated relatively highly with serum pH, lactate and BE (r = 0.64, -0.65 and 0.66, p 0.01, respectively). In conclusion, the body temperature of seriously injured trauma patients on admission for surgery had direct linear correlations with pH, BE and an inverse linear correlation with serum lactate.
