Objectives: This study was aimed at measuring antibiotic use and assessing appropriateness of usage of ceftriaxone in Agriculture hospital during the period from 2009 to 2011. Subjects and methods: Antibiotic use was expressed in DDD/100 patientdays. Appropriateness of empiric prescribing for ceftriaxone was judged according to the prepared list of indications based on the medical literature. Adverse drug events (ADEs) were obtained from patient records and laboratory data. Results: Thirdgeneration cephalosporins (C3G) was the most common antibiotic group, particularly ceftriaxone. Indication for use was inappropriate in 47.6 percent of cases, including prescriptions for upper respiratory tract infections and prophylactic preoperative injection remained high. 11 cases experienced ADEs, making up 4.8 percent, mostly gastrointestinal disorders (vomiting, diarrhoea) and hypersensitivity reactions (rash, pruritus). Conclusions: C3G prescribing, especially ceftriaxon, appeared to be substantial and increasing. However, inappropriate ceftniaxon use was still extensive.
