The control of dynamical real systems in presence of uncertainties and disturbaces is not to avoid. Among the existing methodologies for solution of such problems turns out the sliding mode control to be characterized by simplicity and robustness. The main advantages of this control method is while in silding mode the dynamic of systems is insensitive to model uncertainties and disturbaces. However, in spite of claimed robustness properties. the real life implementation of sliding mode control techniques presents a major drawback, the chattering effect. The chattering and the need for discontinuous control are much more evident when dealing with real systems, that rapidly changing control actions will cause the stress in systems and the systems could be damaged in a short time. For this reason the problem of chattering attenuation has become an important subject of research, even until now. This paper purposes to give an overview about main achievements of classical sliding mode control and of chattering attenuation techniques based on high order sliding mode control. The so called high order sliding mode control is nowadays known as an effective chattering attenuation method in comparision with the other classical methods.
