Backgrounds: Poverty and mental health have been related intimately together. However, there was no research to assess this relationship and offer specific solution in Vietnam. Objective: Describing characteristic of people with mental disorders received livelihood support in Thua Thien Hue province and evaluate the initially effectiveness of livelihood support activities for psychiatric patients. Methods: Both of quantitative methods and qualitative method are using. The quantitative research used follow-up study of 68 psychiatric patients receiving livelihood support and primary career through self-completed questionnaire. The qualitative research conducted in 20 participants included patients, careers, and officers of the mass organizations and clubs, which using indepth interviews and life's histories. Results: The participants' diseases group incluQed: schizophrenia, epilepsy and generalized anxiety disorders (48.6 percent, 29.4 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively), 83.8 percent of patients who being treated
the mainly age group located in the working age approximately 95.6 percent. The percentage of patients with incomes in the previous month with investigate time was 89.7 percent. The average income of patients was 1,279,508 + or - 676 287 (VND). 90.1 percent of primary careers agree that the symptoms of patients is remission, 89.7 percent of patients not only seen stronger physically but also mentally comfortable. 100 percent participants felt more comfortable in communicating confidence and social inclusion. Conclusions: Model livelihood supports have positive impact on not only economic lives but also health status for people with mental disorders. Consider supporting livelihoods as a therapy for people with mental disorders in the household and community.
