Among the old officials of Later Le Dynasty detained in China during the last years of Emperor Qianlong's reign, perhaps La Quynh was mentioned the most. He was the leader of a small group of Vietnamese officials who refused to shave their heads except for a queue and wear Chinese costumes to become Chinese citizens, which was admired by Chinese feudal intellectuals. However, the image of such old officials as Le Quynh, Ly Binh Dao, Trinh Hieu, Le Tri, etc... is indistinct in Vietnamese historical records, even a lot of details and events.related to their lives were defamatory and distorted by historians because of their prejudice or selfish motives. Based on Chinese historical records in comparison with Vietnamese historical records, the article focuses on analyzing the course of relationships between the Qing Dynasty and the Tay Son Dynasty, through which the authors can be fully aware of the fate of the King Le Chieu Thong and his officials who were mere pawns in the hands of Emperor Qianlong and the Qing court to deal with Dai Viet. That complexion helps us understand the significance of what Le Quynh had done and what he had endured during 15 years of distress in China. In a larger sense, the authors can consider the indomitable attitude of Le Quynh as the symbol of the Vietnamese people in dealing with China, the northern neighbor.
