This article provides an initial identification of manifestations of poignancy in Nguyen Huy Thiep's stories which can be seen in many aspects, including the characters' lives. His literary world exposes malformed characters or those dead of many causes, including torture. That is a reflection of the morality of those engaged in war or experiencing epidemics in Vietnam over the last 300-400 years. His works also present the poignancy that is caused by perception discontinunity, expressed by those seen as countryside intellectuals and scoundrels.
