Method: used descriptive, prospective method to study clinical characteristic and extracranial carotid artery atherosclerosis by doppler ultrasound on 83 cerebral ischemic patients with diabetes, treated in Thanh Nhan hospital from 1/2011 to 9/2012 Objective: 1-Describe clinical characteristic on cerebral ischemia patients with diabetes. 2-Describe extracranial carotid artery atherosclerosis by Doppler ultrasound on cerebral ischemia patients with diabetes. Conclude: hemiparesis, sensory loss, aphasia, facial paralysis were most common symptom. Rate of I and II grade limb paralysis according to henry scale were higher. The average NIHSS score was 16,3, majority of patients had less than 20 points (78.3 percent), the group of patients with 16-20 points accounted for the highest percentage (42.2 percent). majority of patients had extracranial carotid artery atherosclerosis. Percentage of the patient with thickness plate from 1 to 2 mm was high. Most common positions were carotid bifurcation, common carotid artery. Rate of carotid artery stenosis less than 30 percent was most high. The more atherosclerosis plaque thickness, the higher NIHSS points or the more severe the clinical status.
