The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs were determined in surface sediments, river water collected from the Con river and its estuary. Soil samples were also collected at the storage area and surrounding areas were analysed to determine the residual levels of persistent organochlorine compounds. Results obtained show that the concentration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in sediments for DDTs ranged from 3.8 to 6.8 ng/g
for cyclodienes from 5.0 to 10.1 ng/g, for PCBs from 14.2 to 104.8 ng/g. The concentrations of the DDTs, PCBs, cyclodienes and HCHs in soil samples ranged from 3.6 to 1351.3
3.9 to 7114.2
2.5 to 1377.3 and 20.9 ng/g, respectively.
