In this article, the comic personae in Ho Anh Thai's short stories are discussed in two aspects: the manifestation of traits and the symbolic representation of life. Although the writer has invented personae representing all sorts of people in society, he has mainly depicted intelligentsia who have vices that were encouraged by the newly opened market economy. Ridiculousness is found in every aspect and situation in real life as is the response it brings out in individuals: to meditate, to fight and to live a better life. By inventing special comic personae, Ho Anh Thai has made a great contribution to Vietnamese contemporary prose.
