Vietnam is situated in a tropical region and having favorable geographical and climatic conditions for fruit and vegetable production. Through statistical analyses, these results showed that in the period of 2006 to 2011, the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable production have been constantly increased in extent, productivity and output. Qualities have also been considerably improved to better meet consumers' demands. Fruits and vegetables have become the major export products of Vietnam in which tum-over has been continuously increasing with 19.2 percent per year
however, they make up only 0.66 percent of the total tum-over of all export products. In recent years, China has been always the largest importer and exporter of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. Today, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables have been exported to 49 countries and regions around the world. On the other hand, there are 43 countries exporting fruits and vegetables to Vietnam. Based on the assessment, the strengths and weaknesses in production and commercial activities of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables were analyzed and concluded that the fruit and vegetable production and exports contribute significantly to rural development and employment in Vietnam. However, it is unobtrusive and incomparable with its potential and other countries in the regions. This urges for a better planning focusing on meeting global food safety standards, reforming policy, establishing a close production-consumption relationship, and ameliorating competitiveness... to facilitate the fruit and vegetable production sector efficiently and sustainably.
