Objective of the study wasto evaluate the clinical and functional results of a s'urgical treatment of patellar dislocation whose etiology was iatrogenic quadriceps fibrosis in children. A prospective study was undertaken from February 2004 to December 2010. The study included 65 pediatric patients (69 knees) who have developed dislocation of the patella after repeated intramuscular injections of antibiotic(s) into the quadriceps muscle. There were 14 males (21.5 percent) and 51 females (78.5 percent). The patients' mean age at surgery was 7 years, 2 months. Patellar dislocation was classified according Bensahel's criteria. In all patients, the vastus medialis oblique was transferred to the superior border of the patella. There has been no poor post-surgical result or recurrence so far
limitation of the knee flexion occurred in 6 knees (8.7 percent), and loss of extension of 5-20° in 6 knees (8.7 percent). Overall, the authors attained excellent results in 47 knees (68.1 percent), good results in 16 knees (23.2 percent), and fair results in 6 knees (8.7 percent). In conclusion, the transfering of the vastus medialis oblique to the superior border of the patella was highly successful in restoring the realignment mechanism of the knee. The technique is simple, safe and effective in skeletally immature children.
