Objectives: Evaluate the histopathological tumor regression grade after the neoadjuvant chemotherapy in oral tongue cancer Staged III, IV (MO). Patients and methods: 55 oral tongue cancer patients staged III, IV (MO) treated by neo-adjuvant chemotherapy Cisplatin and 5FU (CF), followed by operation In K hospital and Ha Noi Medical university hospital from 1/2002 to 10/2010. Results: 12,7 percent of patients had complete regression
9,1 percent had no significant regression grade
regression grade from 5 percent - 49 percent and from 50 percent - 99 percent accounted for 47,3 percent
30,9 percent, respectively. There was no correlation between the regression grade and T, N, stage of the cancer, p 0,005. The regression grade less than 50 percent in the group using more than 85 percent of Cisplatin dose was high (56,3 percent)
in the group using more than 85 percent of SFU dose was 58,2 percent. The regression grade more than 50 percent in the group using more than 85 percent of Cisplatin and SFU dose was higher than that in group using less than 85 percent of the two drugs' dose. The grade II of tumor regression was 65,4 percent
grade III and IV was 18,2 percent
grade I 16,4 percent. Conclusion: Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in oral tongue cancer had downstaged the tumor, proven by tumor regression grade. This downstaging had turned the inoperable patients into operable ones.
