Stunting, underweight, anemia among children under 5 years of age in Vietnam are of public health significance. This study aims to describe the nutritional status, identify the prevalence of anemia among children under 5 years of age in 5 communes, Lac Son district, Hoa Binh province. Body weight and height of 1,307 children were collected, finger blood of 376 subjects was taken for the measurement of Hb concentrations. Prevalence of underweight was 31.8 percent, stunting was 36.8 percent, wasting was 10.1 percent. There was a rapid increase in the prevalences of stunting, underweight, and wasting from the age under 12 months old to 12-23.9 months old. Prevalence of anemia was 38.6 percent, the highest prevalence was found to be 66.7 percent in children under 12 months old, the lowest prevalence was found to be 19.0 percent in children aged 48-59.9 months old. Nutrition intervention is needed for children under 5 years of age, in particular for those in the first two years of life for reducing the prevalence of malnutrition and anemia.
