Objective: To describe the prevalence and epidemiological aspects of schizophrenia in the community in Le Chan district, Hai Phong city in 2013. Methods: A cross-sectional study investigating all population of Le Chan district, Hai Phong. Suspected patients were mobilized by relatives and health collaborators to consult ward health station and then diagnosed by specialized physicians based on criteria for diagnosis of schizophrenia of the WHO (ICD-10). Results: Prevalence of schizophrenia in Le Chan district is 0,12 percent
with 0,16 percent among men and 0,1 percent among women. The incidence of schizophrenia is 0,23 thousandths (0,32 thousandths among men, 0,15 thousandths among women). The mean age of disease onset is 24,28 + ? - 8,34 years (88,5 percent before 30 years-old)
the prevalence is higher among male than female (cases ratio male/female is 46/96 ~ 1,5 times) (p0,01). Most of patients have a low level of education (85 percent have not graduated high school) and mostly 1,23 percent of patients are illiterate
47,11 percent live alone
93 percent are jobless. Condusion: beside the effort to provide treatment to patients, it is of need to set up communication campaigns to reduce stigmatization and discrimination from the society toward the disease.
