This paper describes the current situation of mental health care service facilities and human resources in all provinces, cities in the southern of Vietnam from Da Nang to Ca Mau. The method of epidemiological cross-section study was used. The study found that number of psychiatric clinics in the southern part is quite thin with a total of 13 mental health hospitals and 13 mental health departments in general provincial hospitals
average number of mental health hospital beds are equivalent to 6.4/100,000 population
6/32 provinces have no mental health hospital beds
Equipment is inconsistent, there is a lack of essential equipment, 8/32 provinces have no machine of EEG, cerebral blood flow measurement, electricshock generator
Number of mental health care staff are 13.18/100,000 population and the rate of psychiatrists is 0.42/100,000 population, lower than other countries in the region and the world. Increasing invesLment to upgrade fadlities and enhance capacity of mental health professional staffs in the Southern is necessary and urgent, especially prioritizing for the province in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta regions.
