Phan Vang banana is a native speciaty fruit crop of the ethnic minorities in Thanh Son district of Phu Tho province. This variety has a high income potential that contributes to poverty reduction of the local people. However, due to a number of constraints such as poor cultivation techniques, pest management and limited commercial promotion, the produce has not been well recognised. In contribution to plant resources conservation, hybridization and commercial development for the Northern region of Vietnam, this study was carried out at Thanh Son district during May - August 2013 to discover the origin, distribution and detailed morphological traits of the native variety according to the evaluation standards of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI - 1996). As a result, the banana variety belongs to the group with a high pseudostem (4,02 + or - 0,1 m) and erect leaves. At the time of flowering, a plant has on average 7.9 leaves. Petiole margins are in a winged form, clasping with the pseudostem. The petiole margin width belongs to group 2 ( 1 cm). Leaves are characterized by a medium green colour with the dull appearance, even and smooth upper surface. The leaf ratio of length to width is 3.4, which belongs to group 3. The variety has a rather straight ovary shape and four rowed arrangement of ovules. On average, a bunch has 7.6 hands, a midle hand has around 13 fruits. The fruit length is in the short group of less than 13cm.
