Inguinal hernia is a common surgical disease and predominant in men. Total extraperitoneal (TEP) repair is the most popular procedure for treatment of inguinal hernia due to less pain and shorter hospital stay and suitable for recurrent inguinal hernia and bilateral hernias in elderly patients. Aims: to detennine the outcome of TEP repair for the treatment of inguinal hernia in elderly population. Methods: a prospective, cross-sectional study. Results: 47 patients underwent TEP repair (47 men, mean age 71 years). Patients with ASA 3 accounted for 53. 2 percent. Mean operating time was 58 minutes. There were 8 cases in which peritoneal laceration were found (17 percent). Open conversion rate 'was 2.1 percent (1 case). Less postoperative pain was found in all patients. 48.9 percent patients retumed to nonnal activity in 1 day. Scrotal bruises was found in 4 cases (8.5 percent). Very good postoperative outcome was found in 91,1 percent of cases. Conclusions: TEP repair
was a safe and effective procedure for treatment of inguinal hemia in elderly patients.
