Objective of the study was to determine the proportion of VTE prophylaxis in at-risk postoperative patients. A retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed in patients who had undergone one of the following operations: knee/hip replacement, recto-colectomy, cholecystectomy, hysterectomy. In total, 342 patients were enrolled in the study. There were 78/342 (22.8 percent) patients prevented by either mechanical or pharmaceutical method, including 35/342 (10.2 percent) patients were preventively administered with anticoagulants. Specifically, only 5/342 (1.4 percent) patients had received anticoagulation prophylaxis with the indication, dose and duration in line with the guideline recommended by the American College of Chest Physicians. The proportion of proper VTE prophylaxis in at-risk postoperative patients was low.
