Nutritional status of pregnant women depends on the nutrition and health care during and after pregnancy. thus influences the nutritional status of children. The study was carried out in 5 communes of Lacson district, Hoabinh province to identify the prevalence of anemia, weight gain of pregnant women, and describe the practices of nutrition and health care for pregnant women, and feeding the children. A total of 331 pregnant women participated in the study for Hb analysis and460 mothers who had children under 2 years of age were interviewed. Prevalence of anemia of pregnant women was in 41.1 percent. Mean weight gain during pregnancy was 7.2 +/- 3.1 kg. 90.2 percent of pregnant women attended or = 3 prenatal visits, 12.8 percent of pregnant women did not take the iron during pregnancy, 50.2 percent of pospartum mothers did not take vitamin A supplementation after delivery. Prevalence of breastfeeding for longer than 24 months was 62.9 percent, prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months was 15.9 percent. Anemia among pregnant women of communes in Lacson district is a severe public health problem. Public campaigns to raise women awareness about nutritions for pregrnant and child rearing women should be reinforced in order to increase the prevalence of good practices in nutrition and health care for pregnant women, postpartum mothers and children.
