The patients at risk of cerebral infarction, namely, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and transient ischemic attacks are on the rise. Objectives: To describe the relationship of risk factors with the severity in the patients with cerebral infarction at Phu Tho General Hospital. Subjects and Methods: 190 patients with cerebral infarction, having been treated in Phu Tho Hospital, were divided into 2 groups according to the severity based on NIHSS scores
Glasgow and Rankin scores were used for assessing the relationship of the risk factors in both groups. Results: The percentage of male/female was 1.4
the most common risk factors were hypertension (63.7 percent, n = 121), heart disease (28.4 percent, n = 54), diabetes (15.8 percent, n = 30) and transient ischemic attacks (13.2 percent, n = 25)
the risk of death or worsening in severe cases of ischemic attacks transient in history increased 5.2 times higher than normal
3.2 times for hypertension
and 2.6 times with heart disease. Diabetes causes pathological changes, increasing the risk for the severe group. Conclusions: The pathological factors such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and the history of transient ischemic attacks affect the severity of cerebral infarction patients at different levels.
