The study inventoried up-stream protection forest stands of Chay river, Hoang Su Phi district, Ha Giang province, including seven natural forest states. These all forest states consist of 140 tree species belonging to 48 families, 21 orders. Lauraceae family has highest number of species with 23 species. The number of species and individuals within the same forest state are different among different study area. At forest state of lIa, the number of individual and species ranged from 320 to 470 indivudual and 5 - 8 species per hectare, respectively, and R index ranged from 0.2306 to 0.4472 indicating a less species diversity. While those criteria are higher ar the forest state of lIb with 360 - 760 individual per hectare, 18 - 25 species per hectare and R index ranging from 0.6529 to 1.2825. Forest restoration has not been intervened by human activities with suitable silvicultural techniques to control species compostion, then led to the presence of dominant species with low economic value and poor in protection function.
