Once an exogenous cultural factor, after entering Vietnam and standing the test of time, Confucianism has been Vietnamese to become a type of "Vietnamese Confucianism" that had strong influence on most of the spheres of life, including diplomacy. Under the Vietnamese middle ages, when it had become the ideological prop of the state to maintain the social order, the imprints of Confucianism in all policies and decisions, be they for home or foreign affairs, got more and more obvious. Not only did it have strong impacts on the diplomatic orientations of the dynasties, but it also made important contributions to the formation of the Confucianist-imbued characteristics of wisdom, ethics and behaviours of the contemporary diplomats.
