Dentine hypersensitivity is in the increase in the young population. This cross - sectional study was conducted on 871 subjects from 18 to 79 years old to evaluate the prevalence, severity and distribution of dentine hypersensitivity in adults at HCM city. Dentine hypersensitivity was clinically diagnosed by applying tactile stimuli (50g) and air blast (40 - 65p.s.i, 22 +/- 2oC), and was rated using the 0 - 3 scale. 747 persons were diagnosed as having dentine hypersensitivity, giving a prevalence figure of 85.8 percent including 47.4 percent who responded to the test stimuli with moderate degree. The difference was significant between different ages (p 0.001) and profession groups (p 0.05), but not significant between male and female or between urban and rural area. The average number of hypersensitive teeth increases by age. 10 to 61 percent responded to air blast and/or to tactile stimuli. The distribution of dentine hypersensitivity in tooth types revealed that lower and upper premolars and the first molars were most commonly affected, upper incisors and second molars were the least. Dentine hypersensitivity was common in Hochiminh city, half of the adult population had at least one moderate sensitive tooth. Most commonly affected were individuals between the ages of 40 - 49 and the lower and upper premolars and the first molars.
