Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy for treatment of retinal detachment. Patients and method: Prospective, consecutive, noncomparative, clinical interventional study on 46 eyes of 46 patients with cataract and retinal detachment treated in VNIO from 8/2007 to 4/2008. Combined operations of phacoemulsification and vitrectomy were performed. Variables in medical records include: age. sex, retinal and vitreous situations, operation procedures, anatomical success of retina, intraoperative and postoperative complications and functional success in terms of final best corrected visual acuity... Results: Visual acuity was improved in 78.26 percent to 80.43 percent of cases at the evaluation of 1 week and 3 month post operation respectively. The main reason of non improving VA is retinal detachment recurrent. Retina is well reattached in 91.3 percent eyes after the first intervention. In 100 percent cases, IOLs were well centered in lens capsulas. The main intraoperative complications were pupil constricted (8.6 percent) and corneal edema (4.3 percent). The main postoperative complications were corneal edema (32.6 percent), uveitis reaction (17 percent). The rare complications include posterior capsule opacity (1 eye/ 2.1 percent), anterior capsule constricted (2 eyes/ 4.3 percent), posterior synechie (2 eyes/ 4.3 percent), transient hypertention (2 eyes/ 4.3 percent). Conclusion: This study showed that the combined operation of phacoemulsification and vitrectomy to treat the retinal detachment were safe and effective.
