Being the first writer to modernize Chinese short stories Lu Xun has a special sense of using "the first person" narrative, associated with the display of the "I" with the complexity and contradictory of the new intellectuals. This narrative is rooted in the writer's feeling about life, the writer's conception of lonliness of the individual human. Starting from Lu Xun, the image of self-consciousness, self-awakening of the human condition has formed and developed increasingly. "I" in Lu Xun stories are not simply a kind of person. That is what "I" is strong and brings alot of significance. That "I" can be cognitive towards all aspects of objective reality, whilst also having the ability to sense "oneself". These traits are evident in the "Regret for the past".
