This paper presents introduction of view points for the assessment and analyses of flood risk that may occur to dyke protected polders. The analyses of river dykes and formation of polders in downstream areas of river basins in Vietnam, especially in the North of Vietnam and the review of current design and planning practice for new infrastructure construction and rehabilitation projects is the basis for recommendation on application of an integrated approach taking into account the potential factors that can cause flood risk and vulnerability in a dyke protected polder. The paper also presents initial scientific basis for flood risk analyses in propbability based theoretical and practical points of view when the presence of infrastructure system in the boundary of a polder is counted for in flood risk and polder vulnerability analyses.
