In Vietnam, leading cause of deaths is unintentional injury, including drowning, especially among children. The study aims to identify mortality rate of drowning by sex and age-groups in some provinces in Vietnam, 2008. The results show that mortality rate of drowning was 1.7 percent among 9293 cases. Drowning mortality was highest among children with aged 5-14 (36.5 percent), following 17.8 percent among children with aged under 5. Elderly people had low drowning mortality rate. Among children under 5 years, boys had a significantly higher drowning rate than females (22.4 percent vs. 11.7 percent
P 0.05). Areas with sea and pool had higher drowning rate than other. In conclusions, drowning is the leading cause of death among the children in Vietnam. Prevention programs are needed to implement by interdisciplinary for reducing drowning mortality.
