From 1/1997 to 12/2010, 41 patients with major defects of the weight-bearing area of the foot have been reconstructed by 41 free flaps with sensory nerve coaptation in No.108 Hospital (25 lateral arm flaps, 16 deltoid flaps). The largest defect was 11 x 22cm, the smallest size was 3 x 5cm. The post - operation follow up results shown that 40/41 flaps were successful, one lateral arm flap was totally due to embolism. In 36 patients who were examined after operation, at mean longtime of 38 months. 35/36 patients having defects healed well, sensory of flap achieving 83, 84 levels in 25 cases and 81, 82 levels in 10 cases. One deltoid flap was recurrently ulcerated and insensible. Lateral arm flaps and deltoid flaps have constant edicle, necessary thinness, sensory nerves and vascular diameter suitable for microsurgery. They were proper material for recon~tructing defects of the weight-bearing area of the foot with sensory nerve coaptation.
