Purpose: to study some characteristics of the patients were bitten by snakes in Hue Central Hospital to research the condition of snake bites in Thua Thien Hue province as well as to contribute to increase knowledge about prevention and first aids for rural population. Material and Method: 55 patients bitten by snakes in Hue Central Hospital from November, 2009 to December, 2010 by retrospective study. Results: Snakes bites in male: 54.5 percent and female: 45.5 percent, most of them were 18-60 ages and the farmers (49,1 percent). Bites mostly were at foot and hand (47.3 percent and 30.9 percent respective)
snakes bited people in many situations: working in the fields (36.4 percent), gardening (14.6 percent), walking (9.1 percent), even sleeping (3.6 percent). There were a relationship between the time the patients hospitalized after the bites with the time the patients treated at hospital (r = 0.455
P 0.001). The platelet count 150x109/1: 11 cases (20 percent), PT70 percent: 13 cas (26.5 percent), APTT1.2 normal
4 cases (9.3 percent). Fibrinogen 2g/l: 13 cases (28.3 percent), 4 g/l: 6 cases (13.0 percent). 2 severe cases with CIVD. Educate for people be careful in working: wear boots, gloves, long trousers, sleep in cot, in bed
should not use harmful traditional methods for first aids, carry the patient to the competent dispensaire or hospital as soon as possible.
