Heparin induced thrombocytopenia thrombosis is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis of the immune syndrome is essentially clinical and negative results of laboratory tests do not exclude the diagnosis. If there is a strong clinical suspicion all heparin must be stopped immediately and an alternative thrombin inhibitor should be started. The adoption of low molecular weight heparin is one reason for the reduced incidence of this disease in recent years.
