This research has introduced a methodology in monitoring and assessing the forest plantation based on combination between remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technology. The Landsat 7 ETM + images of 2001,2002 and 2007 have used to make the forest plantation maps at Phu Son and Duong Hoa commune in Huong Thuy district of Thua Thien - Hue province. An ISODATA unsupervised classification are performed based on fusion data from a composite image of the bands ETM3, ETM4 and ETM5 (28.5 m resolution) with panchromatic band (14.5 m resolution). Use of this output, available secondary data together with field data to support for selection of training samples to perform Maximum Likelihood classification. The classification accuracy assessment indicated that the overall accuracies of three classified images are over 87 percent and the respective individual class accuracies (user's accuracy and producer's accuracy) also are over 80 percent. The three classified images are exported to GIS sofware for further processing. The results showed the location and distribution of the closed forest plantation, the new forest plantation and changes of the forest plantation in three different periods. The forest plantations are found in the hills and low mountains and nearly villages. Areas of the forest plantation increased from 2001 to 2007.
