The hydroponic experiment conducted in green house to estimate effect of salt treatment on photosynthetic and agronomical characters in a local rice cultivar (Cuom) collected from North Vietnam and one salt tolerance improved rice variety (A69-1). Rice plants were planted in hydroponic solution with Kimura B method. At tillering stage, the solution was treated with salts 30 mM NaCl, 15 mM Na2SO4, 6 mM MgCl2 and 4 mM CaCl2 for 10 days and control (non-salt), then plants were recoverd without salts for 10 days. The result showed that under salts treatment, in both two rice cultivars, there was found the decrease in photosynthetic characters viz., CO2 exchange rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, SPAD value, maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm). Agro-biological characters such as leaf area and whole-plant dry weight were also decreased under salt treatment. However, Cuom manifested higher CO2 exchange rate than the check variety due to higher stomatal conductance and SPAD value. Under salt treatment, the maintenance of whole-plant dry weight was higher in Cuom than that in A69-1 due to higher maintenance of leaf area. The content of Na+ and S2- were lower in Cuom than those in A69-1 under salt treatment but the content of K+ was higher in Cuom than that in A69-1. It is suggested that Cuom is a good tolerance rice cultivar and it can be used for salt tolerance breeding in Vietnam.
