A research with over 900 people living with HIV (PLHIV) managed by the non-resident clinic in three provinces/cities of Vietnam found that amongst this group, 86.7 percent are between the ages of 20-39 and 27.2 percent are female. 43.4 percent of HIV transmission is through injecting drug use (IDU), and 36.7 percent through sexual transmission. According to the WHO's classification, up to 41.7 percent of the patients are identified as being in the third phase of HIV infection, and the stage of HIV infection for 3.7 percent of PLHIV is not known. 81.7 percent of PLHIV have a CD4 count below 200, and the rate of people living with co-infection of HIV and hepatitis B is 13.8 percent and hepatitis C. 36.0 percent. PLHIV who have side effects during ARV treatment is found to be low, with the lowest side affect being diarrhea and affecting 1 percent of ARV patients, and the highest being hives is experienced by 7.6 percent of ARV patients.
