Background: The current age of mimally invasive surgery, the advantages of laparoscopic surgery have translated into smaller incisions and shorter recovery. However, the laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer have been challenging due to the rectum is in the confines of the deep bony pelvic, along with the standard practice of autonomic nerve - sparing total mesorectal excision. Nowadays, the studies of the feasibility and safe oncologically laparoscopic rectal cancer resection have been concerned over the world. This study aims to assess the surgical outcomes and oncologic results of the laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer. Patients and methods: Prospective and retrospective study assessed 138 rectal cancer patients treated by laparoscopic low anterior resection at Cho Ray Hospital and University Medical hospital from Oct., 2007 to Oct., 2010. Results: Mean operating time 204.20 + or - 62.24 minutes, low lost blood, no conversion and mortality, the incidence of interoperative complications and morbidities were 4.4 percent and 15.1 percent, mean length of hospital stay after operation 8.25 + or - 3.83 days, mean folllowing time were 26.6 months (4 - 48 months). Rates of local recurrences were 7.2 percent, mean survival time 51 months, survival 3 - year time rates 79.7 percent. Conclusions: The laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer is feasibility and safe of the oncologic standpoints.
