A cross-sectional descriptive study aims to describe the main domestic water sources and hygienic status at the households. The study was conducted in Nam Dinh and Dien Bien, with a total of 983 households. The results show that: 1) Most surveyed households were using hygienic water sources (mainly of which were drilled well water in Nam Dinh and protected spring water in Dien Bien)
2) 15.3 percent of households in Dien Bien were using water from open streams, rivers, ponds and lakes as the main water sources for preparing food and daily activities
3) 80.2 percenr of households in Nam Dinh had main water sources with lowrisk pollution, meanwhile this figure in Dien Bien was 48.2 percent
4) 15.6 percent of households in Dien Bien were using water sources with very high-risk pollution.
