Background: Abnormalities of the formed elements of the blood, and of the clotting, fibrinolytic, and related systems, are very common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with nephropathy. Anemia is a frequent occurrence in Lupus nephritis, affecting most patients at some time in the course of their disease. Material and Method: Haematological abnormalities were analysed in 75 prospectively studied patients with lupus nephritis with difference of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Results: The occurrence and significance of haematologlcal abnormalities were analysed in lupus nephritis. Anaemia occurred in 93.3 percent, neutropenia in 18.7 percent, and thrombocytopenia in 17.3 percent of all patients. Patients with anaemia were likely to have low glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The authors found the inverse correlation beetween hemoglobin level and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) with p 0.01. Conclusions: Anemia is a frequent occurrence in Lupus nephritis. Multiple mechanisms may contribute to the development of anemia, including inflammation, renal insuffidency, blood loss, dietary insuffidency, medications, hemolysis, infection,... Patients with anaemia were likely to have low glomerular filtration rate.
