Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is used in pharmaceutical medicine and cosmetics. Annual amount of (CaCO3) used in Vietnam is up to thousands tons, of which over 90 percent is for pharmaceutical industry. CaCO3 can be produced from limestone and/or mollusk shell. However in mollusk shell, especially oyster shell, there is 96 percent - a very high content of course CaCO3, and the rest are minerals and trace elements like iron, magnesium siliceous, manganese, which are essential for human. Alternatively, in whole country there has a large volume of oyster shells, which is a source of waste causing environmental pollution. Therefore oyster shells is considered to have advantage to produce of CaCO3. The state program of science and technology granted tor implementing a project "Research technology and equipment for producing pharmacy-used CaCO3 from oyster shells" with a code of KC.07.21/06-10. This paper shows brief results of the study on technology, designing and manufacturing of the equipment system. Based upon existing technologies and production processes, a system of equipment for producing pharmacy used CaCO3 from oyster shells has been selected, designed and manufactured. A model of production equipment is built in the Vietnam Pharmaceutical Chemistry Joint-Stock Company. After a period of operation, CaCO3 with high quality, meeting the Vietnam pharmacopoeia-3 standard, initially is accepted by market. This equipment system also can produce very low density pharmacy-used CaCO3 , which is used in inhalators in medical and mining inlustries. Therefore, this opens an important aspect in production to reduce amount of CaCO3 imported annually. Special equipment such as washer, furnace, reactor and dryer have been studied and designed with many improvements to agree with manufacturing level, ensure the ease of use, and meet the requirement of hygiene.
