Injuries in children is a public health problem in most countries around the world. In Vietnam, burn is one of the leading causes of injury in children who came to hospitals for emergency care. Main child caregivers (MCG) are important in protecting children and they are also play key role in create a safety environments for children at homes. Their knowledge, attitutes and practice on burn prevention are critical in reduction of burn among children under 5. This study was conducted in Dich Vong Hau ward, Cau giay district, Hanoi that has the highest number of burn cases in children in the district in the past year, with 6 cases. Objectives: 1/ Describe knowledge, attitudes, practices related to burn at home for children under 5 among main caregivers
and 2/ Identify the association among some factors with knowledge, attitudes, practices related to burn at home for children under 5 among this group. This study employed cross sectional design, conducting from February to August 2011. 264 MCGs of children under 5 were selected with systematically random method to participate in survey using a structured questionnaire. Results showed that MCGs who have completed high school have satisfactory knowledge on burn prevention 3.2 times higher than those with lower level of education (p 0.001). MCG who accecced to information on burn prevention for children under 5 has satisfactory knowledge 2.3 times higher than those who did not have access to this information. MCG who are mothers has satisfactory practices 2.27 times better than those who are not mothers (p 0.05). MCG has satisfactory knowledge on burn prevention reported having practices 2.3 times better than those MCG who has low knowledge (p 0.05). The research results showed the needs of expanding the communication programs to increase the knowledge, with priority given to the subjects with educational level oflowerthan high school, improve the practice of MBCs, especially the child mothers, in preventing burns through diversified communication activities. Results indicate the neccesity to expand communication program to enhance knowledge on burn prevention especially for those who do not complete high schools, promote practical skills on burn prevention and treatment for MCGs and mothers particularly via different forms of communication.
