In historical novels, historic characters are real people not only marked in history but also unreally and imaginarily written. These are the places where writers express their talent, creative personalities and send their messages to the present. In the novels Ho Quy Ly and Hoi The, beside building the characters with historical missions, Nguyen Xuan Khanh and Nguyen Quang Than also reproduced the tragedy fate of their characters, especially they pierced deeply into the loneliness of the intellectuals in the society. Ho Quy Ly of Nguyen Xuan Khanh exploited the intellectuals' loneliness with renewal ideology in the outdated time of Tran's period whereas Hoi The of Nguyen Quang Than explored the tragedy of Nguyen Trai's loneliness with humane ideology among the generals of Lam Son's soldiers. Ho Quy Ly and Nguyen Trai characters were built in different situations with different ideals but they always experienced and worried about the intellectual fates in the relationship with the power and finally they were absorbed in the tragedy. The cost they both had to undergo was the loneliness, the loss and the tragic ending.
