Kadsura coccinea (Schisandraceae) is widely used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases such as epilepsy, sleeplessness, enteritis, gastritis, colitis, rheumatism, and postpartum hemorrhage. Phytochemical investigation of the ethyl acetate extract of stems of K. coccinea led to the isolation of three terpenoids, mangiferonic acid (3-oxocycloart-24E-ene-26-oic acid) (3), nigranoic acid (3.4-secocycloarta-4(28), 24-diene-3,26-dioic acid (4), and lancifoic acid (4-hydroxy-3,4-secocycloart-24E-ene-3,26-oic acid) (5) together with two phytosterols p-sitosterol (1) and P-sitosterol-3-0-P-D-glucopyranosid (2). Their chemical structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic methods including FT-IR, MS, 1D and 2D NMR.
