In this article, a cognitive semantic approach is applied to compare figurative uses of the body part "hand" in Vietnamese, English and French phraseology. It is discovered that each language shows evidence of metaphor, metonymy and blends between them. The patterns of conceptual interaction of Ruiz de Mendoza are used to describe the types of cognitiveinterplay that can take place between metaphor and metonymy.
