The study described the epidemiological characteristics of 110 patients died caused by rabies in Vietnam in 2011. Study design was retrospective
all of deaths were investigated by using a questionnaire of National Rabies Prevention Programs, Ministry of Health. The results showed that 87.2 percent of deaths in the Northern Viet Nam, especially in the mountainous province of Dien Bien and Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho. These provinces had about 49.1 percent ethnic minorities. More than half of patients did not wash the wound after biting or contact with sick dogs. 95.5 percent of deaths are not vaccinated against rabies and anti rabies serum. To improve the effectiveness of National Rabies Prevention Programs, need to mass media of vaccinating against rabies, surveillance of rabies in humans and animals as well as enhance the cooperation between medical and veterinary in prevention of rabies.
