Objective: To describe the clinical presentations, laboratory findings and complications in infant with congenital rubella infection.To find maternal, familial and social factors influencing the rubella infection. Methods: Hospital based case series analysis.33 infants admitted to pediatric department in Khanh Hoa General Hospital from October 2011 to April 2012 suspected as congenital rubella infection were enrolled. Clinical data were collected with established protocol. Their living status were followed in each 2 months. Knowledge of rubella were asked with questionanaire both among 18 mothers of cases and 31 mothers whose infant were not affected by rubella infection. Results: Of total 33 enrolled cases, 10 (30.3 percent) were deceased within 4 months of age. Low birth weight on delivery were observed in 80.6 percent of cases. The high rate of complications such as cardiac abnormalities (72.3 percent), ocular lesion (12.5 percent), ensorineural hearing deficits (90 percent), enlarged brain ventricular (37.5 percent). Hyperthermia 38oC (p=0.038), low SpO2 90 percent (p0.001), cyanosis (p0.05). Conclusions: The authors observed many cases of congenital rubella infection with various complications and the mortality rate was quite high. Necessarity of rubella vaccination was not well paid attention among the mothers.
