Objective: Investigation on some characteristics of osteoporosis in elderly type 2 diabetic patients. Subjects and Methods: The study was conducted on two groups: Diabetic group: 100 patients according to WHO 2006 criteria, control group: 100 subjects without diabetes. All study subjects were clinical examination, laboratory investigation including blood glucose, insulinemia and bone mineral density (BMD) test. Results: Overweight and obesity were significantly higher in the diabetic group compared with non-diabetic group's (p 0,05). There was a significant difference on BMD in female lumbar column between diabeticand diabetic group (p 0,05). Percentage of female lumbar column osteoporosis in type 2 diabetes (66.7 percent) was higher than that in non diabetes (52 percent). Femoral neck osteoporosis rate of female diabetic patients was 14.8 percent, higher than non-diabetic groups (6 percent). Conclusion: The rate of osteoporosis in the elderly diabetic patients was higher than those in non-diabetes, therefore, diabetic patients should be well controlled blood sugar and measured BMD routinely to detect early osteoporosis or osteopenia to avoid fractures due to osteoporosis.
